Shopping and doing business in Louth

The town of Louth in Lincolnshire has a special quality that is rarely found in modern England. Louth has retained its medieval street plan and avoided the town centre changes that have blighted many of England’s market towns. Louth Chamber of Business welcomes visitors old and new to enjoy the ‘Capital of the Wolds’ - our attractive and thriving town. We hope this website will give you the opportunity to discover a little about our town before your visit, and especially about the diverse array of independent shops and businesses that are members of the Louth Chamber of Business. As you would expect from a market town, Louth hosts a variety of markets including regular weekly (Wednesdays and Fridays), monthly farmers’ markets, and a thriving Christmas Sunday Market when thousands of visitors come to soak in the yuletide atmosphere and to buy special gifts for their family and friends.

This charming Wolds market town is only a 12 miles from the sea and short trip from the coastal resorts of Skegness and Mablethorpe, the city of Lincoln, and only an hour's drive from Boston. The relatively traffic-free roads mean that you can enjoy your taking in views of the Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – Louth’s idyllic rural setting.

Shoppers visit Louth because it offers an alternative to the vast shopping malls and identical high streets elsewhere. In Louth you can experience the pleasure of spending a day popping in and out of a wide variety of independent retail shops and being served by shopkeepers who are friendly and pleased to be of service, and be refreshed at a variety of tearooms, cafes, restaurants, pubs and hotels with something to suit all tastes and budgets.

Something for everyone

For a small market town, the range of shops and services available in Louth is extensive.

As you would expect in an agricultural and growing area, Louth has many butchers, bakers, fishmongers, cheese shops, delicatessens and greengrocers all selling fresh, high quality, local produce.

We have a fine selection of florists, nurseries and garden centres whose staff will be delighted to brighten up your day, home decoration and improvement outlets, an excellent range of gift furniture and carpet stores - all within a short walking distance and all with friendly staff who will be pleased to advise you.

Louth also boasts a range of independent and individual mens and ladies clothes and shoe shops - in Louth you can browse and buy the latest fashions without the stress and time-wasting of traffic jams, and without noise and queues at the till....you know it makes sense.

This ease of access applies to our other services – optimetrists, lawyers, accountants, surveyors and estate agents – all of which are in our town centre, only a short walk from the nearest parking facilities. Other services including car sales, printers and a variety of trades and suppliers are sited on Louth’s industrial estate or the smaller trading estates to the North of the town but only five minutes from the town centre.

More than meets the eye

Many visitors to Louth enjoy a break to take a look around the attractions that our historic town has to offer. St. James's Church is a magnificent and widely admired example of church architecture with its 16th century spire soaring to 295 feet, making it the tallest parish church spire in England. Louth is one of the few significant settlements sited on the international meridian line - in Eastgate just east of the Northgate junction it is marked by a brass plaque - the Greenwich Meridian of 0 degrees longitude which enables you to stand with one foot in the western hemisphere and the other in the eastern hemisphere!

The newly extended and refurbished Museum on Broadbank showcases the history of the town including its involvement in the crafts and trades of yesteryear. Not far away is the newly opened Millenium Park where shoppers can take a peaceful riverside break. The impressive and unique Brown's Panorama paintings of the 19th century Louth townscape are displayed in the Town Hall Council Chamber. At Riverhead at the eastern end of the town, the 18th century Navigation Warehouse adjacent to the 1770 Louth Navigation Canal has been restored and has a display area with canal memorabilia.

At the western end of the town the delightful Westgate Fields and Hubbard's Hills public park areas provide a pleasant and relaxing environment for visitors and especially children to enjoy open spaces and wooded scenery on the edge of the town.

For those visitors wishing to spend longer in the area, Louth has an extensive choice of accommodation - excellent hotels and guesthouses, self catering apartments and cottages. There are also local caravan and touring sites not far from the town. Louth enjoys a wide variety of food establishments serving both local and international cuisine.

Louth is lucky to have conserved a mixed and attractive town centre where old and new, large and small, national and local jostle side by side to make shopping a pleasurable experience rather than a chore, and a visit to Louth an experience which you will enjoy.
